ECDL remains the most recognised computer certification in the world. Students learn real-world skills that enable them to be productive learners, employees, entrepreneurs and citizens. Twenty first century skills such as collaborating online, working 'in the Cloud', communicating via the Web, managing projects and IT Security are covered in ECDL, alongside fundamental productivity skills such as working with spreadsheets, documents and presentations. The modular design of the programmes allows teachers to have the freedom to choose when a student can start their ICT journey. Ideally from first year, as discrete short courses, or indeed at any stage depending on the timetable structure.  A one-time lifetime registration to gain the international standard in digital skills certification represents the best investment in ICT.

The European Computer Driving Licence is an I.T. qualification recognised throughout Ireland and Europe. The programme consists of a range of diverse Modules, so there is something for everybody – whatever their particular aptitude, talent or career ambition.

In Beara Community School students can avail of the full ECDL training programme. All students are taught the full range of subjects in their normal computer class. Those who wish to do so can then enter for the ECDL exams.

ECDL is administered by ICS Skills based in Dublin.  To enter the programme students must register online with ICS Skills.  This costs €40 at present.  Students are given a username and password which enables them to access Diagnostic and Certification tests.

These tests are carried out online.  It can also be used at home to show the students results and progress through the modules. When all exams have been passed this is verified in school and the ECDL Certificate is issued.

Exams take place on a phased basis. This enables proper preparation to take place.  On completion the student receives an ECDL Certificate issued by the Irish Computer Society now known as ICS Skills. We are all aware of the importance of computer literacy now and in the future. This qualification is proof of the holders IT ability and is an important addition to any student’s achievements.
