Why study history?
You will soon be making choices about what subjects to take for Leaving Cert. These choices are important and may influence your future career or third level study option. Before you make up your mind why not think about studying history?
Choosing history will allow you to acquire a unique combination of skills and insights that will develop you as a person and help to prepare you for a future career and to participate fully in society.

Leaving Cert course content
Leaving Cert history has one compulsory topic which changes every two years. The current topic is Sovereignty and Partition in Ireland 1912-1949. Students also have an opportunity to study Northern Ireland, Europe and United States history.
A research project which is worth 20% of the Leaving Cert mark is completed before your Leaving Cert exam and written in a booklet. The topic of the project is of your choosing.

Skills developed in Leaving Cert
History allows you to develop skills that employers see as necessary on any C.V. Skills such as analytical, research, communication and ICT skills are all relevant to any career.

Career options
Having developed the skills relevant to the study of history you will be able to organise your thoughts, give logical responses, present facts and opinions, make valid judgements and develop research skills. This list is not exhaustive but does lend itself to a wide variety of career options.

Students who studied history at Scoil Phobail Bhéara have gone on to a wide variety of careers in many differing areas some of which include:
