Disability Accessibility are a group of Transition Year Students from Scoil Phobail Bhéara. The group’s main aim at the start of the year was to raise awareness for people with disabilities and to create an app which allows people with disabilities to find disabled parking spaces when driving.
So far this year we have raised lots of awareness about the access to facilities for people with disabilities. We did this by holding a wheelchair basketball event in January at school to make students aware of our project. Last month two members of the group went to the Dáil and questions members of the Oireachtas about the legislation relating to the provision of disabled parking spaces and access to facilities. We created a prototype for our app, which was created by one of the members of our group.
We presented a speakout at the YSI showcase in Cork which went well and we qualified to go to the YSI Showcase in Citywest on May 6th. Here, we repeated our speakout and answered questions on stage about our project. We won our section which was called Making our World More Inclusive and Poverty Free. We are now working on the development of our app with an app developer and we are looking forward to launching it on the app market.
