We are Are you my Type? From Scoil Phobail Bheara, Castletownbere. We are a group of 11 transition year students who set out to learn about blood donation in Ireland and around the world, to change attitudes to blood donation and raise awareness and knowledge of the eight blood types. Our most important goal is to have the first blood donation clinic in Beara in over ten years.

One in four people will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives.
Over 1,000 Irish people receive transfusions every week in Ireland AND approximately 70,000 patients will have transfusions in Irish hospitals this year.
We distributed 736 surveys, interviewed regular donors, as well as people working in blood banks and hospitals.
We visited the Cork Blood Donors Clinic in St. Finbarrs Hospital and The National Blood Centre in Dublin created , art pieces for future campaigns and used social media.
We talked to people who owed their lives to blood donation, created lesson plans, held a red event, ran a slogan competition, poster campaign throughout the school, addressed school assembly and put material on the schools digital notice boards, created visual displays, designed a board game and wrote children’s books.
Since the speak out in City Hall in March 2015 we have designed and distributed posters in eight different languages, encouraging people to donate blood.
We won best under 18 entry in our local St. Patricks Day Parade in Castletownbere .
We are now working with Irish Hemochromatosis Association and the Irish Transfusion Service on education resources for schools on blood donation .
We also joined and promoted worldwide blood donation campaigns.
A blood donation clinic has been confirmed for our town.
We made presentations to GAA clubs as part of It’s in your Blood Campaign and gathered details of 600 potential donors in our area. We have worked with Macra na Feirme and various other bodies with establishing similar initiatives.
We sought advice, guidance and research from the blood services around the world.
The theme of World Blood Donation Day this year is Thank You For Saving My Life. Join us on the 14th of June.
Our message is simple, roll up your sleeves and donate and if you cannot donate – advocate.
Last Wednesday we won Making our World Healthier – Physical Well Being Award at the Young Social Innovator Showcase at Citywest .
