A French exchange is organised every year for a group of Transition Year pupils with students from Lycée Chrestien de Troyes in the Champagne region. The group of Transition Year students visit France for a week with their teachers, and later in the year their French exchange partners visit Ireland for a week.
While in France students participate in outings and activities such as visiting a Champagne vineyard, a day trip to Paris, bowling/ice skating, a visit to the city of Reims and attending classes at school in France.
During their visit to Beara in 2019 French students visited the Lifeboat Station in Castletownbere, did a guided tour of UCC, learned how to do Irish dancing and attended classes.
Erasmus+ funding has been awarded to our school in 2019/20 and 2020/21, which helps to fund the exchange, and the project title is "Beara: Troyes, Embracing our Differences".
Such exposure to the language is invaluable to students in their development of oral and aural skills. The exchange also develops valuable life skills, such as self-confidence, communication, flexibility and social skills. It gives students a unique opportunity to experience another culture first-hand and enhances pupils’ international awareness and understanding, building competences which will help with future employment.
