Beara Community School Transition year students are worthy winners of the prestigious All Ireland Intel Youth Enterprise Ideation Camp Award 2014.
Last Thursday, May 29th, Intel Ireland, in collaboration with the Lions Club Ireland hosted the All Ireland final of Intel Youth Enterprise Ideation Camp at Tullamore Court Hotel, Co Offaly.
The Beara Community School Ideation Camp National Final students did us proud and fought off strong competition to win the All Ireland Intel Youth Enterprise Ideation Camp Award 2014.
Members of the team were Daniel O'Neill, John O'Donoghue, Nicole Elphick, Caitriona Nee, Jayden Murphy and Daniel Gledhill.
Their winnings project entitled S.A.B. Smoke Alarm Band was designed by the students. Allows deaf people or those with hearing problems to be alerted via a vibrating wrist band that their smoke alarm is going off.
They had to pitch their idea at semifinals,13 teams in total, and were one of 6 teams chosen for the final. The students demonstrated how they can become entrepreneurs to benefit themselves and others in their communities.They outshone all other teams with their unique invention,and impressed the judges to take the National award. They were each presented with an ASUS Fonepad Tablet PC powered by Intel Atom Technology.Intel Android tablet by Paul Phelan, Head of Intel Corporate Affairs at Intel Ireland.
The students wish to have this device marketed and distributed globally in the future.
The Beara Community School Intel Ideation Camp was led initially by Robert Chambers, assisted by an expert group of mentors from the Bantry Bay Lions Club namely Marion Rouse, Mary O'Regan Barsum, Tony Roberts, Anne O'Regan, David Percy, John Dervan, Jane Roberts and Ramor Craigie.

The students were accompanied to Tullamore by two members of Bantry Bay Lions, Mary O'Regan Barsum, Vice President and Tony Roberts and Beara Community school teacherFiona O'Sullivan. They were all thrilled with the result and very proud of the students, and their performance.
The final event was the culmination of different camps which took place at Lions Clubs across Ireland in which almost 1500 student took part.
The Intel Youth Enterprise Ideation Camp All Ireland FInal consisted of almost 100 Transition year students representing schools and Lions Clubs from counties across the country.
As part of the Youth Enterprise program Intel has developed a curriculum based on best in class theory and practice related to innovation and ideation. The curriculum has then been delivered by Lion’s Club across Ireland working in conjunction with secondary schools.
At each of the Ideation Camps, students selected projects which if successful would go on to compete at the National Final. The participating students took part in sessions facilitated by Lions Club members designed to help them bring their projects from ideation to reality before pitching their individual projects to a panel of judges.
On All Ireland final day the pitches of the various business and social enterprise ventures were made to the judging panel. The judges were, Dr. Pádraig Ó Murchú, Intel and Ms.Niamh Dowler, Offaly County Council. They were impressed with the professionalism and enthusiasm from the students.
